Giang heads out with a bang!

Art student Giang Tran ended the 2023 school year with two podium placements. Her design for the SMUS yearbook one the BC Cover Of The Year at Friesens. She also received Bronze in the Canada Youth Visual Arts Contest for her age group. Finally, she earned the extremely rare "perfect score" on her Advanced Placement Drawing Portfolio.

Rin has been in the news again. First, because she earned the very rare "perfect score" for her AP 3D art and Design portfolio. And second, her work was selected to be part of the AP art and Design Digital Exhibit.

Fort Rodd Hill

The Digital Art 11 students were honoured to be asked to join the ‘Windows Into History’ project at Fort Rodd Hill National Historic Site. 

World's First Interactive Lounge Chair 

Sonic Solas Ltd. is a startup founded by a SMUS graduate and art student (Christopher Wedick), specializing in interactive furniture utilizing sound-reactive lighting.

The chair, currently on display in the Sun Commons, is their second prototype featuring the Aurora by Limbic Media platform to run the lights. 

Clap, sing, laugh, talk, or make any sound to engage the chair in real-time.

The Getty Challenge

In the Spring of 2020, when the students and teachers needed to learn and teach from home, the Art Department quickly assigned the now famous Getty Challenge where students (and some keen teachers) recreated famous works of art from their own homes.

Collaboratively Painted Piano on Display and Free to Play in Oak Bay

In 2018 the AP Studio Art students, freshly done with their final portfolios, embarked on a collaborative project to paint a piano as part of Oak Bay's Arts and Culture Fortnight. The piano has been available over the years for the public to play and enjoy over the summers since then.

Banding Together

In 2018, Digital Art students collaborated to illustrate a piece of Jazz Music. 

Architecture Winners

In 2016, two grade 11 students, Fo Wu and Jasmine Yu earned first place in the parklet design contest with the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.

National Design Winner

In 2015 grade 11 student, Kiko Wu, took home first place (and $500) in the fashion design category of the Sears DX Canadian High School Design Competition for her jacket and skirt combination. Not only that, she was also awarded the George J. Klein medal in the competition, awarded to the overall single-best entry in the entire competition.

Martian Collaboration

In 2013 the Digital Art 11 students collaborated with SMUS alum and neuroscientist Bechara Saab ‘97, who was living in a Mars habitat simulation. The back-and-forth between Bech and the students resulted in humorous and interesting pieces of animated art exploring life in space.
