Arielle is a graduating senior here at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota on the Acting/ Directing track. She’s had the privilege of dabbling in just about everything SMU has to offer and is beyond thrilled to have been given the opportunity to share this bittersweet story with the Saint Mary’s community. Her previous Saint Mary’s credits include directing for SPLASH, assistant directing for Lady From the Sea and Salvation Road, as well as various acting credits.
Two years ago, I went searching for a piece that would reflect the world I was living in at Saint Mary’s University. I wanted a play to address the questions my friends were struggling to find answers to in their everyday lives. Significant Other provides a glimpse into all sorts of realities we can relate to. The struggles of trying to follow other people’s dating advice, of how to divide your time between old friends and new loved ones, and of moving on, or more importantly, figuring out what to do when all the people around us start moving on without us.
I want this play to showcase the individuality of each character, and how their personalities shape their stories. And most importantly, to drive at the idea that you have to discover your own worth, and how ultimately it has to be a discovery that only we can make ourselves. I wanted to demonstrate how we can present our worth in the same way that we display art in museums, and really highlight Jordan’s inability to find that within himself.
This story is not about finding the perfect significant other, it’s about finding the significance in yourself and knowing in the end,
That you just have to get through it.
