1. 📐 Document Setup

Trim Size (Final Book Size)

Choose based on purpose:

• Fiction: 5"×8", 5.5"×8.5"

• Academic: 6"×9"

• Manuals: 7"×10", 8.5"×11"

👉 Always set your document to the final trim size, not including bleed.

Bleed & Safety

• Bleed: minimum 0.125" (3 mm) on all sides 

• Safe Margin: 0.25"–0.5" inside trim

👉 Extend images/backgrounds into bleed to avoid white edges.

2. 📏 Margins (VERY IMPORTANT)

Use mirror margins for books:

Margin Type and Suggested Size

Inside (Gutter)

0.75" – 1"

Outside

0.5" – 0.75"

Top

0.5" – 0.75"

Bottom

0.75" – 1"

👉 Increase gutter for thicker books (300+ pages).

3. 🔢 Pagination & Layout

Page Rules

• Books must have pages in multiples of 4 (for folded types)

• Start important sections on right-hand pages (odd pages)

4. 🔤 Typography

Font Selection

• Body text: Serif fonts (e.g., Times New Roman, Garamond)

• Headings: Sans-serif or stylized

Font Size

• Body: 10–12 pt

• Headings: 14–24 pt

Line Spacing

• 1.15 to 1.5 for readability

Best Practices

• Avoid more than 2–3 fonts

• Ensure consistent hierarchy

• Use proper kerning and tracking

5. 📄 Paragraph & Text Formatting

• Use justified alignment for books

• First-line indent: 0.25"

• No extra space between paragraphs (for traditional books)

• Avoid widows & orphans:

  • Widow = last line alone on next page

  • Orphan = first line alone at bottom

6. 🖼️ Images & Graphics

Resolution

• Minimum: 300 DPI for print

Color Mode

• Use CMYK, not RGB

File Types

• Preferred: TIFF, PNG, high-quality JPEG

Placement

• Keep important elements inside safe margins

• Full-page images must include bleed

7. 🎨 Color & Ink Coverage

• Avoid excessive color coverage to prevent smudging or you can use a seperate thicker paper for heavily colored pages

• For grayscale printing, convert properly (not just desaturate)

8. 📑 Headers, Footers & Page Numbers

Page Number Placement

• Top outer corner or bottom center

• Do NOT number:

  • Title page

  • Copyright page

Headers

• Left page: Book title

• Right page: Chapter title

9. 📚 Chapter Design

• Start each chapter on a new page (preferably right side)

• Use consistent chapter headings

• Add spacing before chapter titles

10. 📎 Preflight Checklist (Before Printing)

✔ Correct trim size
✔ Bleed added

✔ Colors in CMYK

11. 📤 Export Settings (PRINT-READY PDF)

• Format: PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4

• Include:

  • Crop marks

  • Bleed marks

• Embed all fonts

• Downsample images to 300 DPI (if needed)

12. 📕 Cover Design (Separate File)

Parts of Cover

• Front cover

• Spine

• Back cover

Spine Calculation

Depends on:

• Paper thickness

• Number of pages

👉 Example:

• 100 pages ≈ ~0.25" spine (varies by paper)

13. 🖨️ Printing Considerations

• Paper type (Bookpaper, C2S, etc.)

• Binding type:

  • Perfect binding (common)

  • Saddle stitch (thin books)

  • Hardbound
