The Indian Immersion trip will visit and serve in a Lasallian educational community in Keelamudiman, in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. We are sixteen students-strong and two teachers strong, walking in kinship with the students of Keelamudiman and the surrounding villages.
Our journey gives us the opportunity to connect with a rural community in southern India. We’ll work with children from St. Joseph Higher Secondary School, the St.Lasalle English Medium School. Our physical labor includes painting school furniture and laying bricks for the new Saint Mary's Pavilion, a multi-purpose hall, which will serve as the center for educational activities, cultural programs, and community events. Another essential aspect of our daily schedule will be engaging classrooms of students in learning activities, games, and dances.
We'll be immersed in the daily lives of the Tamil people, whose language is widely known as one of the world's oldest. Our gracious hosts are the Brothers who live at Lasalle Deepam: Bro. Jeevagar, Bro. Santiago, Bro. Vincent, and Bro. Anbu. After our time in Keelamudiman, the Brothers will take us to Madurai, which is known as the "Athens of the East," and is dominated by the iconic 2,500-year-old Meenakshi Amman Temple on the Vaigai River banks. Then, in Chennai we'll visit the Santhome Cathedral Basilica, built over the tomb of St. Thomas the Apostle. We'll also visit the incredible temples to Shiva and Vishnu in Chennai.
Animated by a deep desire to connect, we'll work hard, play joyfully, and relish experiencing the global Lasallian family!
