Design & Create Outdoor Living

Course Description

During Design and Create Outdoor Living (DCOL) students study outdoor living. There is a large emphasis for students to discover what they like in Outdoor Living. Students study the design cycle and its specific steps to come up with multiple designs to satisfy a Design Brief. Students are expected to work in teams, working together on one large project at school. The students have to design and then build an interesting garden which reflects their tastes in Outdoor Living. Individually, students are required to design or re- design an outdoor living space at their own home. This is a design task only and students are not required to build this hypothetical space.

Learning focuses of DCOL

Individually and collaboratively, they apply imaginative and innovative strategies to develop creative design options, including those that are not immediately obvious, and plans for production.

Students develop greater spatial awareness, are encouraged to think flexibly, and represent their ideas using two- and three-dimensional hand- and computer assisted drawing and modelling techniques including the use of appropriate technical language.

Concentrating on the aesthetic, functional features and/or performance of the garden, students consider how it could be improved, and compare it to other similar products. They discuss and develop evaluation criteria to analyse and evaluate their completed garden and consider the social and environmental impacts of their own and others products
