In order to participate in 8th Grade Promotion, what is the community service requirement?
8 hours by April 21, 2025
Can I do more hours?
Sure! Our community needs you!
Those who contribute 25, 50, or 100+ hours will be especially recognized at the Promotion Ceremony.
Do all my hours have to be with the same organization?
No, but organizations appreciate a commitment and you can gain a better perspective over time.
Can I work in my parent's office?
No, unless your parent is employed by a non-profit or human service organization.
How do I know if organization is a non-profit?
"Google it" to find out if it is a 501 (c)(3) organization. If you still have a question, ask!
Does volunteering for an animal shelter or pet rescue count?
Yes, but often these organizations require those under 16 years of age be accompanied by a parent/guardian and many require a long-term commitment.
What if I choose to do a charity walk/run?
You may count the time you gave to help make the event successful and any time spent doing fundraising. For example, you might be a part of the clean-up crew after the event for 1.5 hours and you spent .5 hours asking friends and family to sponsor you. You can record 2 hours.
Can my parent be my supervisor?
No, a parent is your advocate, transportation, and possibly a participant too--not the supervisor of the event.
Do the hours I already did (summer and/or September) count?
Your service before the official launch of 8th Grade Community Service counts toward the 25/50/100 Community Service Award.
However, you must invest at least 8 more hours of your time and talent by April 21, 2025.
I plan on applying for National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) for 2024/2025. Can I count these eight hours for NJHS?
It is an additional honor to be accepted into NJHS for your academic achievement and service. Therefore, you will need to fulfill the NJHS requirement and the 8th Grade Promotion requirement of 8 hours.
