Students organized a drive outside of Pet Supplies Plus and collected food, toys, and cash donations for the Smithtown Animal Shelter and Hope for Cleo Animal Rescue.
Students recycled old t-shirts to create braided dog toys for dogs at the Smithtown Animal Shelter.
Madeline and Kate (11th Grade) hosted a Blood Drive at the Nesconset Building of the Smithtown Library. They reached their goal of 35 donations (105 lives affected).
Students shared breakfast with veterans at the Arbors Assisted Living.
Alex (11th grade) volunteered at a Long Island Cares food drive at the Bay Shore Shoprite.
Kate (11th grade) organized multiple fundraisers for Long Island Cares and was able to raise over $1,300. This equates to 800 meals for people in need. Kate also participated in the Hunger 101 workshop, where a representative from LI Cares taught students about the organization and the issue of food insecurity on Long Island.
Sophia (11th grade) formed a team to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. She successfully raised $27,000 through a variety of fundraising events.
Students created a "butterfly garden," which helps to increase the world's population of Monarchs. Butterflies are important pollinators, and butterfly gardens are great for the environment because they increase biodiversity.
As part of their SLP focusing on the environment, students taught a lesson about Earth Day to 4th graders across the district. The lesson focused on the importance of Earth Day, some basic green habits to use on a daily basis, and culminated in a STEM-based activity using recycled plastic water bottles.
