Students developed a compost system at Smithtown HS West. Composting significantly cuts down on the amount of trash in a landfill and reduces the costs and carbon emissions it takes to haul and process those materials.
Students worked with the Suffolk County Board of Elections to organize a "Voter Information Program" at Smithtown HS West. The presentation involved teaching the graduating 12th graders about the importance of voting, the process itself, and then assisted the students with voter registration. After, they ended with an "ice cream ballot" where students did a mock election (voting on ice cream flavors) using the actual voting machines/ballot scanners.
Smithtown HS East students visited the Smithtown Animal Shelter to learn shelter operations as part of their Civic Capstone Project.
Nearly all of the 330 million balls made worldwide each year eventually are thrown in the garbage, with most ending up in landfills, where they can take more than 400 years to decompose. Students created “Serve, Receive, Recycle” for their Capstone project, where they designed a plan to collect used tennis balls that can be repurposed for the desks at the elementary schools.
Christin (12th Grade) worked with district stakeholders and was able to successfully advocate for the incorporation of a meatless entree option (veggie burger) into our monthly cafeteria menu. The "Meatless Monday" initiative was designed to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions.
West students have been working on a Capstone project to preserve important local history and address the issue of veteran appreciation. They have organized an oral history project to interview the veterans currently featured on the HS West Wall of Heroes. Recorded interviews will soon be shared on a website that they created.
