NO REED

FLUTE

The Flute does not use a reed.
To make a sound, you blow across the hole in the mouthpiece, kind of like if you have ever blown across the top of a bottle to make a sound.
To change the sound, you press down on the keys.
The Flute sounds high.

SINGLE REEDS

CLARINET

Mouthpiece with single reed

The Clarinet uses a single reed on the mouthpiece.
To make a sound, you blow into the mouthpiece.
You change notes by pressing different keys.

DOUBLE REEDS

OBOE

Double reed

The Oboe uses a Double Reed as the mouthpiece.
A double reed is 2 pieces of wood pressed together, and you blow between them.
The Oboe is the highest Double Reed Woodwind.

BASSOON

The Bassoon is large. It is folded in half, but if unfolded, it would be 8 feet 4 inches long.
It uses a Double Reed.
It sounds low.
The Bassoon is sometimes called "the clown of the orchestra".
