Leadership

The PE department at Smithdon High School provides plenty of opportunities for our students to develop leadership opportunities in sport.

Year 10 Sports Leaders Course

During Year 10 all students complete a Sports Leadership course within their PE lessons. The students have the opportunity to utilise the skills and qualities learnt throughout the leadership course during a Smithdon High School cluster 'Primary School Festival' organised and led by Year 10 sports leaders.

The course is taught within students' PE lessons, split into 3 units:

Unit 1 – Developing leadership skills

Unit 2 – Plan, lead and evaluate sport/physical activity sessions

Unit 3 – Assist in planning and leading a sports/physical activity event.

Unit 1 is delivering through a series of theory lessons and practical workshops. Unit 2 is a practical based element where students lead small groups of their peers to demonstrate and develop the skills learnt in unit 1. Unit 3 is assessed with students involved in the Smithdon Cluster Schools 'Primary Sports Festival'.

Opportunities to further develop these skills can be found with Year 10 and Year 11 students helping out during KS3 co-curricular clubs and teams, with students volunteering to run after school sessions or manage/organise Year 7 and 8 school sports teams.

The West Norfolk School Sport Leadership Academy

All students at Smithdon High School have the opportunity to sign up to be part of the West Norfolk School Sport Leadership Academy. This is run by Mrs Bower and gives students the opportunity to access coaching, junior leader and officiating courses in a wide range of sports. These run during the school holidays and are Sport Governing Body accredited courses that look great on CVs and Personal Statements.

Being part of the Leadership Academy also gives students the opportunity to be used as School Sports Leaders at primary school cluster events around the local area. Smithdon Students are often used to help organise, officiate and score at local primary school competitions.

An application form can be found below. This can be completed and returned to Mr Ward.

Beyond The Baseline

Smithdon High School has also hosted the Lawn Tennis Associations' 'Beyond the Baseline' leadership programme for many years. The PE department selects some Year 8 student to participate in the programme with 'Beyond the Baseline' athlete mentor, former British tennis star Jade Windley. The programme lasts for around 3 sessions and involves Jade running some tennis based leadership activities through which students develop a range of communication, confidence, leadership and organisational skills. The programme ends with the students planning, setting up and delivering tennis based sessions to some Year 7 students. Students involved also receive a certificate, a free T shirt, water bottle and drawstring bag.
