Students at KS4 get 2 hours of PE every fortnight. The curriculum involves a wide range of both team and individual sports and offers students the opportunity to continue to develop their physical skills, understanding of tactical and strategic skills and develop their physical health, well-being and fitness.
The KS4 curriculum develops on from the key qualities taught through the Head, Heart and Hands assessment model through the use of key 'life skills' that we feel can be delivered through PE. PE groups are given a key life skill each half term through which they have an autonomy to choose the activity or activities that develop the life skill through. This gives an individuality to each group at KS4 to cater to each groups needs, increasing engagement, enjoyment and the development of a lifelong involvement in physical activity.
The development of key life skills taught through Physical Education will also help students prepare for their future careers as these skills are easily transferable tom many aspects of their futures outside of their education.
The life skills delivered in our curriculum are:
Competition
Recreation
Rules and Officiating
Health and well-being
Leadership
GCSE PE students use their PE lessons to continue their GCSE PE Practical assessments with skills being assessed in isolation and in competitive situations within lessons. This is covered by the 'competition and recreation' elements of our life skills curriculum.
Sports that are taught in KS4 include: Athletics, Basketball, Badminton, Cricket, Dodgeball, Football, Gymnastics, Handball, Hockey, Fitness training, Netball, Rounders, Rugby Outdoor Adventurous Activities and Tennis.
Year group curriculum plans can be seen using the document links below.
Sports Leaders
During Year 10 all students complete a Sports Leadership course within their PE lessons. The students have the opportunity to utilise the skills and qualities learnt throughout the leadership course during a Smithdon High School cluster 'Primary School Festival' organised and led by Year 10 sports leaders. More information on the course can be found on the Leadership sub page.
