At Smithdon High School we are proud to be able to offer impartial, informed and high quality careers education, information, advice and guidance to all students, across all year groups. We offer this to fully prepare our students to make informed choices for post-16 education and training, enabling them to become equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to be successful, to raise their personal aspirations and to empower and prepare them to go on to take all opportunities, responsibilities and experiences in adult life.
Aims:
At Smithdon our careers education, information and guidance (CEIAG) has the following aims:
· To provide independent and impartial advice for all pupils
· To educate and empower all students to make informed decisions and succeed in whatever path they choose
· To raise students aspirations
· To support inclusion, challenge stereotypes and promote equality
· To maintain and build new links with advisor networks, further and higher education providers and a network of employers
· To give experiences of further and higher education, apprenticeship and employment
Schools now use The Gatsby Benchmarks which are a framework of 8 guidelines, adopted by the Government, to ensure students receive the best careers provision. These are as follows:
1. A stable careers programme
2. Learning from career and labour market information
3. Addressing the needs of each pupil
4. Linking curriculum learning to careers
5. Encounters with employers and employees
6. Experiences of workplaces
7. Encounters with further and higher education
8. Personal guidance
We are continuing to develop our programme of activities and support to ensure we offer as many opportunities and experiences as possible. Students will have a better understanding of the pathways available to help them achieve their goals, will develop a better understanding of the skills and qualities employers want, along with an awareness of work related learning.
Across both Key Stages 3 and 4 students are engaging in careers education within their personal development lessons with Form Tutors. Alongside this are assemblies, visiting higher and further education and apprenticeship speakers, taster days, super learning days, employer visits and Unifrog.
