Current Unit: Unit 1 - The War for Independence (1700s-1780s)
Chapter 1 - Colonization Leads to Conflict
This Week We're Learning: This week, we will review the 13 Colonies & learn more about how & why they were established. We will begin exploring how the growth of the colonies affected the people who were already living in North America, including American Indian nations.
Learning Target: Students will be able to identify & analyze the impact of conflicts between colonists & American Indian nations caused by the expansion of colonization.

Vocabulary:
colony: a settlement controlled by a separate country
conflict: a serious disagreement or argument
cooperate: to work together to achieve a common goal or benefit
interaction: the act of talking or doing things with other people or thing

outpost: a remote base or settlement
scarcity: the lack of resources to produce all the goods and services that are needed or wanted
Try This at Home: Ask your child to name as many of the 13 Colonies as they can! Talk about why people came to the colonies & how the growth of the colonies affected the American Indian nations already living on the land.

Chapter 2: The French & Indian War
This Week We're Learning: Students will learn about the causes and consequences of the French and Indian War and how the conflict helped shape the future of the American colonies. We will explore Benjamin Franklin's role during this time, including the Albany Plan of Union and his famous "Join, or Die" political cartoon. Students will also learn about Fort Loudoun and its role in Tennessee during the French and Indian War.
Learning Targets:

I can analyze the meaning and purpose of the "Join, or Die" political cartoon.
I can explain the importance of Fort Loudoun during the French and Indian War.

Vocabulary:

We're continuing our study of the French and Indian War this week (check last week's tab for more info)! We'll finish up Chapter 2, review the important people, events, causes, and consequences, and prepare to move on to our next chapter. Test over Chapter 2 on Friday!
