5th Grade RLA (Reading Language Arts)

Course Overview

Welcome to 5th Grade RLA! This year, students transition from learning to read to reading to learn and think critically. Through deep-dive novel studies, poetry, and informational texts, students will enhance their reading comprehension, expand their academic vocabulary, and analyze themes, character development, and historical perspectives.

Class Novels

• The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster – A whimsical exploration of wordplay, critical thinking, and the joy of learning.

• Thunder Rolling in the Mountains by Scott O'Dell and Elizabeth Hall – A compelling historical fiction study examining perspective, conflict, and resilience during the Nez Perce War.

• The River Between Us by Richard Peck – A rich narrative setting the stage for historical analysis, family dynamics, and the impact of the Civil War.

• The Boys’ War by Jim Murphy – A powerful nonfiction look at the real experiences of youth during the Civil War, drawing on primary sources and historical accounts.

In writing, students will focus on crafting structured opinion essays, informative reports, and creative narratives using strong textual evidence and vivid detail. Students will also develop dynamic grammar and mechanics, practice peer collaboration, and develop strong public speaking and presentation skills.

5th Grade Social Studies: Early American History & Geography

Course Overview

Step back in time to explore the shaping of North America! In 5th Grade Social Studies, students embark on an interactive journey through American history—from indigenous cultures and early exploration to the American Revolution, westward expansion, and the Civil War.

Students will examine primary source documents, historical artifacts, and map work to understand how geographical features, key historical figures, and landmark decisions shaped modern society. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking, evaluating multiple perspectives, and exploring what it means to be an active, informed citizen.
