Welcome to Intermediate Italian! This course is aimed at developing your reading and writing skills at a more advanced level. We will go beyond the textbook to look at Italian "in the wild." Through a wide examination of authentic Italian cultural materials -- literature, newspapers, poetry, social media, contemporary television -- you will develop a deep knowledge of Italian culture and language as well as strong intercultural competence skills that will help you navigate a complex multicultural world.
While this course has a set of fixed themes, our lessons will often follow the headlines. You will develop a broad understanding of contemporary Italian media culture as well as current events and politics. For example, if this course takes place during election season, we might look at campaign ads. This past spring, if you were there for our Sanremo screening and saw the infamous "ballo del qua qua," my class looked at some of the cont roversies that unfolded in Italy in the aftermath of that incident. Reading brief newspaper articles will build your reading and writing skills and they are a great way to review those Italian grammar concepts in context.
Sample materials:
Campaign ads & political speeches
Newspaper articles & debates about important policy proposals
Signs, memes, and other materials related to activist movements (lo ius soli, #quellavoltache)
After the first few weeks, we will dive into more advanced grammatical structures. You will analyze and construct complex sentences with multiple subjects and temporalities, as well as learn to use the participles "ci" and "ne" as well pronominal verbs. This may sound boring, but pronominal verbs happen to be great for arguing — avercela, prendersela, farcela, and so on — so one of our lessons is devoted to the great catfights of Italian reality television, which I have transcribed so that we can analyze how those structures work - as well as perform them in class!
Selected materials:
Vanity Fair Italia interview with athlete Paola Egonu: "Che ne sai di me?"
clips from Italian reality series Grande Fratello & Temptation Island
excerpt from Elena Stancanelli's novel La femmina nuda
The final weeks of the class will be devoted to a travel itinerary project. This is an opportunity to start thinking about how to make the most out of your future travels! I want your time in Italy — whether you are going for a week or for a year — to be authentic, sustainable, and transformative. In addition to examining tourism ethics and etiquette, I will also share with you some of my own experiences in Italy, including seeing live music, amusement park-hopping, and hiking in Campania.
