Step 2: Submit Graduate Institute Enrollment (Fall and Year students only) - Due August 31st 

FOR TRACK A/C STUDENTS ONLY

Please complete the Graduate Institute Enrollment by following the steps:

1. IMPORTANT: Around August 20th, check your emails regularly and be on the lookout for  the subject Graduate Institute Login sent to you by international.programmes@graduateinstitute.ch (you may have to check in your spam folder).

2.  This will give you the 13 steps necessary to get enrolled at the Graduate Institute (IHEID); you can find the content* of this email below (subject to changes, last year’s version).

3. You will first be enrolled (in the fall 24 to secure visa procedures) and then get access to the new course catalogue and IHEID 2024-25 course offering. In order to register for courses you will need to do one-to-one advising sessions on January 25 with your program director.

4. ATTENTION The Graduate Institute (IHEID) is responsible for providing  visas and other legal documents allowing your stay. You need to check your emails and are responsible for respecting their deadlines.

5. Smith College cannot be accountable for missing steps in the visa and the IHEID’s registration process. In case of problems or questions, please, contact gpiron@smith.edu.

ATTENTION: The University of Geneva is a French-speaking institution. The Graduate Institute is a bilingual institution but to better benefit from your study abroad experience, as much French as possible will be a must to connect with local life and make friends. 

Note on French Test

You need to take a French placement test and send it to your program Director (Geneviève Piron) by September 7th.  Please, register here (you must enter your email address twice), validate and pay, then take the test. It should not take more than 40 minutes. It is divided into parts (grammar and vocab, written understanding, and oral understanding), and you will see that it is growing more and more difficult at each session in each part. Don't worry if you have to drop: it is intended to become increasingly difficult up to a native speaker's level! Just do your best.  At the end, you should click on the button on the top left which proposes to send you the result (A2-B1, B1-B2, maybe B2-C1 if you are very strong).  

Don't worry about the test, it may be imprecise and you will all take French courses to support your integration. Note that to take courses in French (there is a small selection of Socio or Political Science/Environmental studies courses offered in French at the Graduate Institute) you must be at a B2 level.  

The price is CHF 30.- (to be paid with a credit card). It will be reimbursed by Smith College (in cash when you arrive in Geneva).

Please upload the result of your test when you register online for your mobility – AND send it to the academic director Geneviève Piron by email.

• Bachelor or Undergraduate, your Major, Smith College, USA (no need to mention degrees prior to University education)

• Name, surname, and DOB must correspond to the data on your passport.

• Semesters at the Graduate Institute: Be careful to click both boxes if year-long, and the box corresponding to your semester abroad, as it will have an impact on your visa dates.

Please, check the recap of your date and edit so that there is no mistake: your name, surname, and DOB must correspond to the data on your passport.

Step 11

Validation: You need to validate the data in order to receive the last step confirming your registration.
