Reading in 2nd Grade

It's my hope that our reading program will foster a love of reading while exposing students to various genres. Your child will be made aware of their current reading level so they know which books are appropriate for them to read . I will also post this inside of their green folders. Please know the level will change throughout the year. I look forward to exploring different genres with your child and deepening their love of reading this year!

Choosing Good Books at Home

I want your child to love reading and I know you do too! When reading at home, try to provide books and materials around your child's reading level. If books are too easy they won't challenge and/or interest them. If a book is too hard it becomes frustrating. It's also a great idea to stop and talk about what is being read along the way! Here are some great second grade level books to investigate.

Ready, Freddy!

These shorter chapter books are about a mischievous boy named Freddy who loves sharks.

Calendar Club

This series of chapter books follows three friends as they solve mysteries in their small town.

Henry and Mudge

A series of shorter chapter books by Cynthia Rylant about a boy and his lovable and large dog.

Frog and Toad

Each book includes about five short stories about these two friends.

Students in second grade are expected to work toward reading an average of 20 minutes each night. They can read for fun or to work towards meeting their reading log goals for our class. Parents should initial a monthly reading log that comes home at the start of each month.
