STEM 4 encompasses standards from both fourth and fifth grade common core standards. We will begin instructional units with fourth grade content and extend the learning to fifth grade standards. For example, in our first unit students will begin by mastering place value strategies of multiplication then extend the learning to the fifth grade standard utilizing the standard algorithm for multiplication.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NBT.B.5

Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.B.5

Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.

Students are assigned homework Monday-Thursday, and it is due the day after it is assigned. Math/science homework should not exceed 20 minutes combined as with Language Arts homework. Homework is graded for completion and checked in class. In order to receive full credit, students must show their work for each problem, possible. I do not collect homework; however, students should keep the work as study guides for tests and quizzes.

If your child is spending more than 20 minutes for Mrs. Carpenter's homework Monday - Thursday, please contact the teacher.

Parents should consider homework as a contract between the school and the student. It is the student's responsibility to complete homework. Parents can best assist the process of learning by providing a consistent time and a quiet place for students to complete their homework and by showing a positive interest in it. It is important for students to complete the work independently, seeking minimal assistance from adults. If your child struggles with a concept or lesson, all his thinking should be shown on the homework paper so questions can be answered when he returns to class.
