Using materials found in your home, design and construct a city!
Have you ever wanted to live in a city?
Which type of city is your favorite? Do you like cities filled with high-rise buildings like New York City, Los Angeles, or Denver? Perhaps cities on a body of water are your favorite like Chicago or Miami? Or do you like cities inspired by Greek-architecture like Washington DC?
Do a bit of research on cities and decide which city you like best. Then, draw or sketch out a plan for what your city will look like.
Once you have a plan, gather up materials for your city. For this project, you want to collect random objects that you would find laying about your home. These could include previously empty paper towel rolls and toilet paper rolls (please do not empty them just for the project). Food wrappers and paperboard boxes such as cereal boxes or toaster pastry boxes also make great construction materials. You can decorate your city with crayons, markers, paint, Play-Dough, buttons, pipe-cleaners, paper straws, anything, really.
Start building! Your only limit is your imagination, and, perhaps, your construction materials. I find it best to use a flat, stable surface for my construction projects, so check with your parents or guardian to get help in finding a suitable building location.
Remember to keep all construction workers safe - ask for help with scissors and glue!
The videos below can serve as inspiration, but feel free to be creative in your design and structure.
