The supply of clean water and the efficient use of energy and water are essential to human health and well-being. During this module, students will work to answer the question: What is the best way to heat water? Throughout the module students will explore the connection between water heating and climate change, design insulation and conduction experiments, build their own solar water heater prototype, identify barriers and solutions to adopting solar water heating, and reflect on career opportunities in the energy, environment, and utilities industry.

The severity of the climate crisis demands that we think differently about how we energize and power our lives. This module is designed to pique students’ interest in careers within the CA industry sector “Energy and Power,” and encourage them to enroll in the high school CTE Pathway called “Energy, Environment, and Utilities.” During this instructional unit, students will explore the relationships between energy source, energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, and climate change, with a particular focus on the energy used to heat water. Then, students will learn about solar thermal energy and its applications in heating water as an alternative and a solution. Students will work in teams to prototype their own solar water heating unit. Then, students will learn about policies and programs, including rebates and incentives, to help transition to clean energy, and they will consider how they themselves can be effective agents of change.
