"Green Careers Awareness"
Elementary School Program
Green entrepreneurship aims at creating and implementing business solutions to environmental problems, and promoting social change so that the environment is not harmed. The purpose of this module is to introduce students to a wide variety of green careers and environmentally-sustainable practices and strategies employed by socially-responsible businesses. Students serve as consultants to a chocolate business, called "The Chocolate Company", that produces organic and fair trade chocolate bars. These consultants are charged with finding ways that the company can expand their product line, which involves market research, cost-benefit analyses, advertising, prototyping, and recommendations to make factory upgrades. Students pitch their idea to the owners of The Chocolate Company, who determine which idea is most successful in meeting the challenge.
The San Mateo County Office of Education adapted the "Solutionary" Project-Based Learning (PBL) framework to design an instructional unit that complements the students' San Mateo Outdoor Education (SMOE) experience. These ten lessons (five implemented before SMOE and five lessons after SMOE) provide students with the context to compare the systems and practices utilized within their school and school campus related to energy usage, water usage, waste management, and land-use with those they will experience at SMOE. This unit includes a design challenge for students to solve a specific, school-based problem that could potentially lead to the transformation of their classroom, building, or campus.
