St. Mary's College of Maryland
Biology, B.S.
Attending St. Mary’s College of Maryland has fostered my creativity, and has taught me collaboratively and planning skills. It has also helped me establish a foundational knowledge of my discipline and prepared me for a professional career in science. I look forward to another two years at this instution as I pursue my degree in Biology.

Biology Emerging Scholars Program
ESP allowed me to connect with my peers and professors in biology during my first semester on campus while also introducing me to complex and real-world topics in the field.
–
Principles of Biology I & Lab
This course focused on biological studies at the cellular level. This included topics in biochemistry, cell structure, and metabolism. The lab introduced statistical tests, microscopy, and spectrophotometry.
–
Principles of Biology II & Lab
This course discussed diversity and classification amongst organisms as well as introduced ecological concepts. The lab reflected the lecture content and included research in phylogeny and a student-designed manipulative experiment using plants. Additionally, R-script was part of the lab curriculum.
–
Genetics & Lab
This course discussed heritability, genetic variation, character traits, and the origins of genetic techniques. The lab included skills such as DNA extraction, PCR, plasmids, mutagenesis, and cell culturing.
–
Ecology and Evolution & Lab
This course examined the nature of relationships between organisms at different levels of organization. This included population dynamics, genetics, speciation, and biogeography. The lab involved microscopy, fieldwork in local marshland, soil analysis, and leaf pack research.
–
Organic Chemistry I, II & Labs
This course covered the mechanics of carbon-based chemistry. The lab included skills such as NMR, compound synthesis, and purification.
