The National Arboretum is 1.5 miles from the apartment and has a stunnng variety of trees and gardens on about 500 acres of land. It also has a Bonzai museum and huge Corinthium collumns that were installed at the Capitol building in 1828.
Kingman and Heritage Islands are less than 1 mile from the apartment and perfect for a quick getaway from the city. They have been designated State Conservation and Critical Wildlife areas, and are situated along the Anacostia Riveralk Trail, which will leads to the Aquatic Garden toward the North and the Congressional Cemetary, the DC Waterfront and National Stadium toward the South.
The Saturday and Sunday street markets have been a regular feature of Eastern Market for over 125 years, and includes produce from local farmers, musicians, artists, and craftspeople. There's also a summer Thursday night market and a flea market on Sundays.
Union Market is 1.5 miles from the apartment, and is a new addition to the renovations taking place in the old Wharehouse district, and now includes restaurants, stores, mixed-use buildings, a local art-house movie theatre, and even a rum distillery!
The new District Wharf is actually 4 miles from the apartmet but definitely worth seeing, especially if you're near the National Mall and need a break. You can also easily get there by taking the metro at Stadium Armory. It's actually a stunning new addition to DC with a nice boardwalk along the river, a huge fire-pit, water taxis, and lots of retaurants. Surprisingly, the new development left the old Fish Market intact, but you might want to buy some crabs from one of the oldest fish markets in the country before the city begins Phase II of the project.
The Aquatic Gardens are 2.5 miles from the apartment and easily reachable by a nice bike ride along the Anacostia River trail or the Orange Line from Stadium Armory metro to the Deanwood station. It has expansive lotus and lily gardens, and wood walkways over the marshes.
