There will be two Advanced Writing Assignments (AWAs) required during the semester (identified in the timeline below). These assignments are referred to as advanced as they: 1) pull together many writing skills we will have learned about; 2) will be 3+ pages in length; and 3) will include “building assignments” (for example identification of a topic, writing of a first draft, etc.). Each AWA will have its own specific rubric (provided on the google course and the syllabus website). Assignment descriptions and guidelines for the two AWAs are also provided in the google course and on the syllabus website.
As was stated above in the grading section, every student must attend the Writing Center once per semester to pass the course. This also counts as one of your 5th hours! You must attend the writing center for one of the two “Advanced Writing Assignments” and must bring a draft of the assignment with you (you cannot use your required tutorial for brainstorming or planning). Your peer mentor, Di, will be doing a brief presentation to show you how to make an appointment and give you some ideas for how you may wish to use your tutorial.
There will be two opportunities for writing conferences during the semester, one that happens during class time and one that happens outside of normal class hours. Details on what these look like will be provided closer to their scheduled date. Students may choose to attend one, both, or neither but should note that to earn higher than a C+ in the course, they must attend at least one of the two options.
