Arts

🩰 Dance  💃

In addition to learning the basics of movement, the pioneers, the foundations and the elements of dance, students will rehearse and perform teacher and student choreographed dances. Students will have an opportunity to explore creative movement and composition, watch and analyze performances, and discuss how dance education has transferable skills to life and future careers. 

🎬  Drama  📽️

Drama study at the Grade 9 level provides students with an opportunity to take on roles and to create and enter into imagined worlds. They learn in a unique way about themselves, the art of drama, and the world around them. Students engage in social interaction and collaboration as they create, perform, and analyse drama. Through informal presentations and in-class formal performances, students use drama to communicate their aesthetic and personal values.

Outside of the drama course, all students can audition for the annual school play. 

🎼  Music  🎺

Music study at the Grade 9 and 10 level is intended to develop students’ understanding and appreciation of music through a focus on practical skills and creative work. The grade 9 course emphasizes the creation and performance of music and is aimed at developing technique, sensitivity, and imagination. Students will develop musical literacy skills through learning a wind or percussion instrument. Students will develop an understanding of the conventions and elements of music as well as how these skills are transferable to other areas of their life. 

🎨  Visual Art  🖌️

Students create art works that integrate the fundamental components of design known as elements (colour, form, line, shape, space, texture, and value). Students explore design principles (balance, contrast, emphasis, harmony, movement, proportion, rhythm and repetition, unity, and variety) and use them to arrange design elements to produce visual effects.

Mediums used: pencil, oil pastels, water colour paint, wax crayons, conte, tempera paint, acrylic paint, ink, lino block carving, clay, paper mache, and more! 

Business

These courses introduce students to each of the major areas of business: business operation, accounting, marketing, information and communication technology, human resources, production, management, international business, finance, and entrepreneurship.This introductory course aims to ensure that all students acquire a general understanding of the role and nature of business, as they begin to develop management skills related to financial decision making and ethical business practice.The course will provide a strong foundation both for students who wish to pursue business studies in greater depth and for students who wish to master the business-related knowledge and skills required for everyday life. 



Computer Sciences & Robotics

This exploratory course introduces students to concepts and skills in computer technology, which encompasses computer systems, networking, interfacing, and programming, as well as electronics and robotics. Students will develop an awareness of related environmental and societal issues, and will begin to explore secondary and postsecondary pathways leading to careers in the field. 

Languages

English 🖊️📝

Grade nine English class will help students improve their literacy and communications skills. They will learn to anlayze texts and create texts. Students will express their ideas through writing in various styles. They will engage with learning by reading, writing, listening, and speaking with peers in small groups. Students will take English every year in high school and this course will lay the foundation for their success.  

French 🖊️📝

In the Grade 9 programme, emphasis will be placed on improving oral and written proficiency in French. By using the CEFR approach, students will be asked to use French in a variety of authentic situations using an action-oriented approach. Focus will be placed on spontaneous interaction in real-life, practical situations. Some of the themes may include school, self and family, directions, the community, and instructions. 


Continuing in French throughout high school gives students access to trips, exchange programs, career opportunities, scholarships, and more! Students who complete all four French courses in high school will have the opportunity to write a Diplôme d’études en Langue Française (DELF) exam. DELF is an internationally recognized proficiency certificate that is helpful on job applications, and post-secondary applications.


Mathematics

This course enables students to consolidate, and continue to develop, an understanding of mathematical concepts related to number sense and operations, algebra, measurement, geometry, data, probability, and financial literacy. Students will use mathematical processes, mathematical modelling, and coding to make sense of the mathematics they are learning and to apply their understanding to culturally responsive and relevant real-world situations. Students will continue to enhance their mathematical reasoning skills, including proportional reasoning, spatial reasoning, and algebraic reasoning, as they solve problems and communicate their thinking.

Physical Education

This course equips students with the knowledge and skills they need to make healthy choices now and lead healthy, active lives in the future. Through participation in a wide range of physical activities, students develop knowledge and skills related to movement competence and personal fitness that provide a foundation for active living. Students also acquire an understanding of the factors and skills that contribute to healthy development and learn how their own well-being is affected by, and affects, the world around them. Students build their sense of self, learn to interact positively with others, and develop their ability to think critically and creatively. 


Religion

The course focuses on encouraging students to know and love by following in the footsteps of Jesus. As they learn of his words and deeds, they discover the importance of prayerfully serving the community to bring about the Reign of God. Students explore Catholic rituals, teaching, practice, morals and values, and virtues to facilitate a healthy and covenantal relationship with self, God and with others.

Sciences

In the Grade 9 Science course, students will develop and refine their STEM skills as they use scientific research, scientific experimentation, and engineering design processes to investigate concepts and apply their knowledge in situations that are relevant to their lives and communities. Students will continue to develop transferable skills as they become scientifically literate global citizens.

Social Sciences

The grade 9 compulsory social science cours is destreamed geography.

Geography is about determining the significance of “place” as it relates to the natural environment, the human environment, and interactions within and between them.

Technology

🧑‍🍳  Hospitality & Tourism 🍣

This exploratory course introduces students to concepts and skills related to hospitality and tourism, focusing on the areas of food handling, food preparation, the origins of foods, event planning, and local tourism. Students will develop an awareness of related environmental and societal issues, and will begin to explore secondary and postsecondary pathways leading to careers in the field. 

🪛 Exploring Technology🛠️

This exploratory course introduces students to concepts and skills in construction technology, which encompasses plumbing, electrical and network wiring, masonry, heating/ cooling, carpentry, and woodworking. Students will develop an awareness of related environmental and societal issues, and will begin to explore secondary and postsecondary pathways leading to careers in the field.
