Tech Kids IIT Madras

History: The origins of Tech Kids trace back to the 1990s when the staff club ran it. A receptionist by the name Roja used to run it at the time with six children. Around 1997, with the initiative of Prof. Natarajan (then the Director), it received official recognition from the Institute. It was christened "Day Care cum Child Activity Centre (CAC)" with Prof. Hema Murthy as its first chairperson. It was initially run in a shed and employed a teacher and six helpers. The enrollment increased to 30 students, but the shed was not found to be very appropriate. Subsequently, two D1 apartments were assigned to the CAC and Mrs. Bharati Gandhi used to administer the place. Running from morning till evening, it employed two teachers and many helpers. Children were picked up from both campus schools and dropped at the CAC. Various activities such as art, music, theatre, clay modelling, games, Hindi classes, dance, gymnastics, and summer workshops, etc., were organized. To ensure that the children went home happy and energetic, they were taken every day to the children's park (now defunct) near the campus MoH quarters. The need for a permanent location was felt with the growing numbers and activities. Under the leadership of the new director, Prof. Ananth, and active management by his wife, Mrs. Jayashree Ananth, a new location (where Tech Kids currently stands) was identified. A full-fledged building was constructed, and the CAC was renamed as "Tech Kids" in 2004. Since then, Mrs. Viji Bhaskar and many campus residents have contributed to the growth of the creche. 

The daycare is run under the aegis of the IIT Madras Campus Welfare Trust and has been helped by generous contributions from the IIT Madras Alumni Association.
