OBS

OBS : Open Broadcast Software

Link to download the software :

https://obsproject.com/

It has versions for mac, windows and linux.

Here is the procedure for the mac version, it may not be very different for Windows/Linux.

Use the routine clicks for downloading and installing the software. I don’t remember selecting/deselecting anything specific during this process.

Once the OBS is downloaded :

You need to specify the source of audio and the specific window (Among your several open windows) that needs to be used for recording.

To teach using a powerpoint presentation:

1. Open the ppt that you want to use and click on slide show , keep the slide show on– you can then later tell OBS to capture the slide show.

2. In OBS software, Under Sources, click +

3. Choose “Audio Input Capture” from the dropdown list

4. “Create New”; Change the name if you wish and click on OK

5. In properties, choose “Built- in microphone” and click OK. You have now finished selecting the audio source for your recording.

6. Go back to the Sources Tab, click +, Choose Window Capture, click OK

9. Under properties, choose the powerpoint slide show (which is already kept open). Click ok.

10. You will then see the projection of your slide show in the OBS, with a red/blue square around it. Drag the red square so that it fits the OBS screen.

  1. You could add camera input if you wish that your face appears as inset in the presentation. For this, click on + under Sources. Select Video Capture device, click Ok. Choose the video camera device of your computer in properties. You can resize the camera capture and adjust the location in the screen.

  2. You are now all set to go. Start Recording by clicking the “Start Recording” option on the far right side. Move on to the power point slide show and talk. After you finish, click on End Recording.

  3. All other background popups, windows that you may pull out- etc does not get recorded. The file is by default stored in the Movies/Videos folder. Alternately, click on “Files” in the OBS front panel and click on “Show Recordings”; the software takes you directly to the folder where your recorded file is stored.

  4. Make sure that you record for only ~ 15-20 min at a time. This is important to keep the file sizes small.
