While in Belize

Accommodations

We'll be staying at Blue Belize, a bed and breakfast by the Caribbean Sea.  You can view more photos and learn about Blue Belize HERE.

Activities and excursions

We arrive in Belize City later in the afternoon on Saturday and spend Sunday resting and enjoying our surroundings.  Students may choose to visit local shops or the beach area.

Starting on Monday, we start getting to know business in Belize!  The first half of the week is spent in the Toledo district of southern Belize, learning about Belizean Maya agriculture, including cacao processing/chocolate-making, medicinal plants, and honey production.  We also participate in some service projects at a local elementary school.  The second half of the week is spent learning about turmeric farming, production, processing, and selling.  Throughout the week, we spend a lot of time with local farmers, learning about organic farming practices and agroforestry.

We also have some fun activities planned, including a visit to Snake Caye (snorkeling, swimming, and beach time).  We visit Lubaantun, a Maya cultural site, to learn more about the historical culture of southern Belize.  We visit and swim in San Antonio and Rio Blanco Falls.

Academic Expectations

The Belize Business Immersion counts for Reflection-in-Action for the University Core.  As such, we have some academic expectations.

Students must participate in pre- and post-trip meetings and small group projects as assigned.  Presentations on your findings will be given before and after the trip during these meetings.

While in Belize, students will engage in structured reflection in the Ignatian tradition.  This will include group discussions, journaling, and the Examen.
