Belize Immersion: Enterprise for the Common Good is a three-credit course that integrates academic collaboration with hands-on experiential learning opportunity. As part of this experience, students visit and engage with organizations and community partners in Punta Gorda, Belize, Central America. Students will explore global supply chain practices, indigenous history and land rights, preservation of natural resources, biodiversity, socioeconomic development, communication, entrepreneurship, sustainability, and community development. Through site visits, lectures, interviews, reflection activities, and project work, students will deepen their understanding of Belize and its people.
We will be spending the week in Punta Gorda, which is in southern Belize. You can learn more about Belize's history, the Punta Gorda area, and population here.
All students participating in this experience must be undergraduate students in good academic standing.
Students must be studying at the SLU-St. Louis campus in Spring 2027.
Students will need to enroll in BIZ 3750: Belize Immersion - Enterprise for the Common Good (3 credits), offered in Spring semesters. The course is sponsored by the Chaifetz School of Business, but it is available to all SLU undergraduate majors. The trip will take place during SLU Spring Break and we will have class meetings before and after the trip throughout the Spring term.
The cost of the trip for Spring 2027 will be $1600, which will cover meals outside of the airports, excursions, and accommodations. Students should bring their own spending money. Course fees are applied to students' bills and financial aid may be used. Students will also need to purchase and plan their own flights.
Students must have a valid passport secured that is not due to expire within 6 months of the departure date. International students must also work with their International Services Counselor on immigration policies. If you do not have a valid passport, you can learn more about applying for one here. If you're thinking about applying for the Belize Business Immersion, do not wait to start the passport application process. Routine passport processing can take 8 weeks or more.
This trip includes a number of physical activities, including, but not limited to: swimming, snorkeling, hiking, extensive walking, lifting, kneeling, digging.
The majority of our time is spent outdoors, where daily high temperatures are usually 80°F or higher.
