Covers scientific theory and research in the major areas of biologically- and socially-based
areas of psychology including research methodology, physiological psychology, sensation,
learning, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, personality, psychological disorders
and treatment, health psychology, social psychology, and industrial/organizational psychology.
Social Psychology PSY 3300
This course covers research methods, social cognition, social perception, the self, cognitive
dissonance, attitudes and persuasion, conformity, obedience to authority, group processes,
attraction and close relationships, prosocial behavior, aggression, prejudice, and the
social psychology of health.
Health Psychology PSY 4350
Examines research on health psychology from a social psychological perspective including the
topics of health behavior theories, weight control, alcohol, smoking, stress and coping, healthcare
utilization, patient-provider relationships, adherence, chronic and terminal disease, personality,
social support, and designing health persuasive messages.
African American Psychology PSY 4340
Cross-listed with African American Studies AAM 4340
The course covers research methods, several theoretical perspectives, the Africentric approach,
and research on self-concept, racial/ethnic identity, language perception, education and
intelligence testing, skin tone, close relationships, media images and persuasion, clinical/counseling
psychology, and health psychology.
Close Relationships PSY 4320
Uses a social psychological approach to cover research on close relationships including the topics of research methods, attraction, social cognition, communication, interdependence, friendship, love, relationship maintenance, stresses/strains, conflict, and dissolution.
