My current research explores the connection between philosophical conceptions of the self and contemporary schizophrenia research. Empirical evidence suggests that people with schizophrenia experience a loss or fragmentation of the self in conjunction with psychotic breaks. I postulate that by understanding how the self is restored or reunified in schizophrenia treatment, we can gain insight into the constituents of an integrated self. In addition to interpreting contemporary research on schizophrenia, I evaluate philosophical and psychological accounts of the self, such as the narrative self, Frankfurt's view of self integration, and Ryan and Deci's Self Determination Theory. I further tie my work into philosophy of disability literature, including the work of Eva Kittay and Jean Vanier.
Though much of my current work lies in philosophy of mind, I hope to extend it to issues in bioethics and well-being.
