Sophomore year is an important time in your academic career. You've had a year of classes, experiences, and relationships at SLU. All of these things, along with your entire life to this point, speak to who you are and where you may be going.
St. Ignatius would encourage you to pause and reflect on your freshman year. Take some time to really think about what you have learned about yourself. What classes did you like, and why? What classes did you dislike, and why? What people did you spend time with, and why? What clubs did you participate in, and why? Think about your job, service site, internship - any experience at all - and what you learned about yourself. It's the "why" part of these questions that will show you more of who you are and what or who inspires or motivates you to be your best self.
Devote some time NOW to the process of discovering who you are, what you like to do, what your skills, strengths, and values are, and what all of that might mean for your future. Many students find they need someone to guide them through this process, and that is what happens in an appointment with a career counselor. Schedule your appointment today through EAB Navigate. Even if you know what you want to do, confirming those plans with a Career Counselor can give you confidence going forward.
Before that appointment, consider working through this simple exercise:
Write down your current career goal.
Now write down your "plan B."
Finally, if there were no barriers (money, talent, skills, etc.), what would your goal be?
Write down positive and negative aspects of each career.
Focus on the positive aspects of each - maybe circle them.
Can you put more of those "positives" into your actual plan?
Do all of this reflection with an open mind - open to seeing things you have not seen before, and allowing yourself to go different directions. No one is going to make you act on those thoughts - at this point they are just thoughts and ideas. You may find that you are excited about a completely different plan, and that's OK! Now is the time to make that change if you want to, and there are people here at SLU to support you in that process!
Create your degree by combining courses and experiences that are unique to your interests - those may include study abroad, internships, research, service opportunities, clubs and activities, leadership roles, and more!
