My experience over the past 10 years in Eastern Washington, has allowed me to work with a diverse population and specialize in the alternative field of education. I believe that done well, alternative education is the best option for students who want to be all they envision. With guidance, coaching, and steadfast leadership, students can be given the start they may, or not, have missed early on in life.

I graduated from Central Washington University in 2004 with a degree in Biology Education. I was the high school science teacher at Soap Lake for 15 years. A couple of years ago, at a teacher conference, I watched 3 students passionately talk about their alternative school. Each of the students talked about how their attitudes about school and their own future were dramatically changed by this new school where they set their own learning plans and learned through internships. They spoke passionately about their learning and it just blew me away! This is where I first learned about Big Picture Schools.
When I got home after that conference, I told myself that Soap Lake needed a school like that and the Superintendent, Mrs. Pray and I visited the school up in Twisp to see what they are all about.
It was at that school that I realized that there is another way to do school, one where students can follow their own interests and passions. Now that I have the opportunity to share this with my students, I cannot imagine doing anything else!
Let's go do something amazing together!
