The School Library System offers movie licensing services from SWANK Movie Licensing USA . This coverage gives schools within the St. Lawrence-Lewis region the ability to show a legally obtained copy of a film within the school building. Please note the restrictions below.
Who can show movies?
These licenses cover staff, PTA/PTO organizations, community groups, and anyone else who shows a movie within the school building. You cannot charge admission to the movie, though asking for donations, selling concessions, or charging a fee to cover other event costs is permitted.
Can I show any movie?
No, each company only covers certain movie studios and publishers. If you cannot locate the movie studio for the film you would like to show, it is not covered by this license and your showing may be considered copyright infringement. (Check the SWANK catalogs before your showing).
Where do I get the movies?
Additionally, you must use a legally obtained copy. This includes personal or library-owned DVD's or digital copies, movies found on Swank Movie Streaming database available from your school library, but not movies obtained through most personal subscription streaming services. The terms of service for personal streaming accounts such as Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and others prohibit the public showing of videos accessed through these services. This means that you may not share content from these services as part of a school event or in a classroom. Teachers within the SLL BOCES region have access to SWANK Movie Streaming, which provides over 225 popular titles, as well as thousands of others that are available by request.
How can I advertise my movie event?
Please do not post the movie name or images on social media platforms or your school website, as this violates the terms of the license. You may send printed flyers home, display posters in the school building, or include movie information in email newsletters, online classrooms, and other closed digital platforms. Log into the SWANK promotions website to access printable promotional materials (use customer number 97912-1). Customized posters, movie ballots, bookmarks, movie tickets, and activity sheets are available to print.
