America's Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program that takes place at schools across the country. At Los Ranchos, students in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades read books from a predetermined list aligned with their grade levels. At the end of the year, students are put into teams and participate in battles (similar to Family Feud or Whiz Kid style competitions) to test their knowledge of the books they have read.
To qualify for the Battle:
4th grade students must read at least 10 books
5th grade students must read at least 12 books
6th grade students must read at least 15 books.
Books can be read independently by the student, read to them by a teacher or parent, or even listened to via audiobook (see the public library and SORA for any Battle books that might be available as audiobooks).
Students then take an AR (Accelerated Reader) quiz on each book they read and must pass with 70% or higher (one retake will be granted for each book). Books must be read, and quizzes passed, at least one week before the day of Battle which takes place in May/June (exact date to be announced). AR quizzes are now accessed via Clever portal and must be taken at school.
Specific information about qualifying for the Battle, Battle books and reading levels, and AR tests will be given out during library time and by teachers.
3rd Grade teachers also offer their own Battle of the Books reading incentive program, using a separate list. See third-grade teachers for details on how to qualify for the 3rd grade battle.
