For students, particularly those who wish to access college and/or university it is a good idea for them to look at the individual college prospectus for information regarding minimum entry qualifications for courses.
The following subjects are compulsory:
English
Mathematics
Core Physical Education
Religious Education
Tutor Time
Please see link below.
At the end of S2, our students choose the 8 subjects (2 of which English/ Mathematics are compulsory) they would like to undertake through S3/4 to National Qualification level.
Please see below the link to the column structure and form.
Our students will choose from a column structure. This means they will choose a 1st choice subject and a 2nd choice subject from each column. As a school, we endeavour to do the best we can by each student. However, subject availability is mainly due to student uptake and staff availability. Should it not be possible for your child to gain their 1st choice subject we will look as best as possible to offer them their 2nd choice.
We do not advise our students to select the same 1st & 2nd choice over 2 columns.
Your child will have access to lots of information to support them through this process. Our Option Process will make this easier for them. However, if they are still struggling, a good plan may be to:
Revisit the My World of Work website. It has lots of further information with interactive tools that showcase your child’s strengths. Please see link below.

Look through your child’s report card and highlight those subjects that are strengths
Look through your child’s report card and looking at those subjects they enjoy.
At the end of S2 , our students choose the 8 subjects (2 of which English/ Mathematics are compulsory) they would like to undertake through to National Qualification level. To ensure coverage of the Broad General Education (BGE) in S3 our students have the opportunity to undertake three ‘Academy’ subjects in to encompass the Experiences and Outcomes of the Broad General Education. There are a wide range of subjects within the Academy which come under the Broad General Education areas of the BGE (Technological Subjects/ Creative Subjects/ Languages/ Health & Well Being) This would mean that students should find it easier to ‘pick-up’ subjects in S5 and give them the best chance of success.
The Academy subjects pupils take will depend on the 8 subjects pupils choose to take forward to National Level.
E.g. Sean wants to become an electrician. He has chosen the following from the curriculum areas stated.
To fulfil the BGE Sean must choose from the Academy column a Modern Language (Spanish/ French or Portuguese) and Creative Subject (Painting & Drawing/ Music or Drama), he can then choose one other subject from the Academy options of his choosing.
To make the Academy options as straight forward as possible, we ask pupils to submit their number one preference in each of the 5 Academy areas. Based on these preferences pupils will be allocated to the Academy class that ensures they are accessing all curricular areas.
Please see Academy option form below for further information.
Your Academy subjects are chosen at the same time as your main option choice. As previously stated, please select one Acdemy option from each of the 5 columns.
Please refer to the “Academy Option choice Booklet”. Please see link below.
In S2 students will choose from a column structure. This means they will choose a 1st choice subject and a 2nd choice subject from each column. As a school, we endeavour to do the best we can by each student. Should it not be possible for your child to gain their 1st choice subject we will look as best as possible to offer them their 2nd choice.
Please check out the school website where you will find the following information/ links regarding the range of subjects available:
We suggest that you sit with your chid and access the Google Classroom Careers page which holds additional information.
Pupil Support Teachers will distribute paper copies of the option form to pupils in PSHE lessons.
On this form pupils should choose their 8 subject areas and their Academy choices. Please be aware that forms will be two sided to ensure all information is collected and easily collated.
These forms should be completed, signed by a parent/ carer and returned by the young person to their Pupil Support Teacher on or before the 14th of March.

The Scottish National Qualifications Framework is Scotland’s lifelong learning framework. It can help you understand and compare the wide range of Scottish qualifications on offer. The framework covers achievements from school, college, university, youth clubs and the workplace. It clearly shows that qualifications have the same worth whether achieved through school, college, university, the workplace or another route. Altogether the framework has 12 levels (the learning programmes become more difficult as SCQF levels increase).
