Frequently Asked Questions

1. When will I find out my S1 class?

Before the end of June we will issue you with two classes:

•       1D1, 1D2, 1D3, 1I1, 1I2, 1I3, 1M1 or 1M2 - this will be your larger class which you will follow when attending core subjects like English, Religious Education, Physical Education.

•       1DA, 1DB, 1DC, 1DD, 1DE, 1IA, 1IB, 1IC, 1ID, 1MA, 1MB or 1MC - this is your smaller class which you will follow when attending practical subjects like Science, Art and Music

The letter in each class represents your House Group:

         D-Dunkeld House

M-Melrose House

         I-Iona House

We also aim to distribute your timetable before the end of June.

In each House Group there is a ‘Head of House’ along with Pupil Support Teachers as follows:

2. Will my friends be in my class?

Yes, we can guarantee you will be in your registration group class (core subjects) with at least one of your requested friends.  We can not always place everyone in their practical classes with a requested friend.

3.   How will I know where to go on my first day?  

On your first day you will enter through the front door of the school and remain in the street area.  Mrs McCulloch will be there to meet you and give you information before you begin classes.  

4.    What will I bring to school?

You should bring your school bag, pen, pencil, rubber, ruler and packed lunch or lunch money every day.

You should check your timetable for when you have to bring:

PE Kit - You will be given the opportunity to purchase the Trinity High School PE Kit during the P7 Visit Days.

Books, jotters and homework for each subject area that you have that day

5.  What will happen on the first day?

You will enter through the front of the school where you will be welcomed by staff and Mrs McCulloch who will inform you where to go.  We will start our first day by celebrating Mass together in the street area.  Timetables will be distributed on the first day.  You will follow your timetable for most of the day.   Your pupil support teacher will help you move around the school from class to class for the first two days.

6. If we get lost are there teachers in the hall or nearby to help us out?

Yes, there are always teachers in the street area and nearby to help you. We realise it takes time to get to know your way around so we will ensure that there staff and upper school pupils around to help you.

7.  What happens if you are late to school and miss meeting the person who is helping you find your class?

There will be teachers in the street area and you can also ask for help at the school office.

8.   Do we have the same timetable throughout the year?

For most subject areas you do.  However, there will be 1 change involving Music and Drama.  Drama and Music will rotate every 10 weeks throughout the year.  

9.   How long do we get for breaks?

You will find this answer when you complete Activity 1 under ‘Activities’. 

10. Will the teachers know how good I am at subjects and will they support me when I have difficulties?

Yes, we have been and continue to work very closely with your teachers and Head Teachers discussing your strengths and support needs if required. Our discussions started in August 2023 and will continue through to June 2024.  This information will be shared with your S1 teachers.

11. What will we learn during our time at high school?

This is very difficult to answer in one question as you will each have your own learner journey but overall you will develop a better knowledge and understanding and skills for learning, life and work across the following curricular areas in S1-S3:

•       Expressive Arts

•       Health and Wellbeing

•       Languages

•       Mathematics

•       Religious and Moral Studies

•       Sciences

•       Social Studies

•       Technologies

After this, you will follow your own personal learner journey depending on your chosen career/pathway.

12. How many teachers teach one subject?

There can be as many as 15 teachers that can teach one subject but you will more than likely have 1 or 2 teachers delivering one subject area to you.

13. How much homework will we get?

This will be different across each subject area. Your teachers will give you more information about homework in August.

14. What uniform do we have to wear? 

The Trinity High School uniform consists of:

15. Will I get my tie for Trinity before the summer holiday?

Yes, school ties will be distributed during your full day visit to Trinity High School.  Please note this is a gift from Trinity High School. 

16. How can I order my blazer? 

Our uniform partner is Scotcrest Uniforms.  Please visit their website at: www.scotcrestschools.co.uk

We also aim to have a uniform event at the end of day on the full day visits as well as during day one of the summer transition days.

17. Is it true you have to wear a black jacket?

Ideally, we would like you to wear a black jacket.  However, once inside the school building you will be asked to remove outdoor jackets.

18. How do we get a locker?

You will be informed when you are able to hand in a £10 deposit for a locker.

19. Are the teachers nice?

YES!!! Primary school teachers and Secondary school teachers are very similar we just teach different age groups.

20. Is it scary?

No, but it may seem like that at first as you are changing from primary school to secondary school.  It may help you to read how the current S1 felt this time last year in the final newsletter when it is released.  

21. What if you are a picky eater and don’t like anything at lunch?

Please let your pupil support teacher know if this is the case for you.  There is usually lots of choice and usually there is something for everyone.  They can talk you through the options and help you find something you like.  Lots of people also bring packed lunches so this could also be an option.  

22. When is it appropriate to use your phone?

During interval and lunchtime. 

23. Do you get to go on school trips?

We hope to be able to offer school trips again this year.  Last year we had a range of successful trips for all year groups to places such as the Five Sisters Zoo, Top Golf, the Time Capsule and Science Centre so we hope to be able to run some trips again.

24. Is the Summer Transition Programme going ahead this year?

We were able to run a very successful summer transition programme last year and we had record numbers of pupils attend.  Our summer transition programme will run for three days in July and there will be lots of fun activities for you all to get involved in.  We really hope to see you all there!

25. When will I get to visit?

We are currently organising both a half day visit in March and full day visits in June for you.  We are hopeful that we may get some other opportunities to arrange visits to take part in departmental activities such as our PE Sports days.
