Holy cross High School offer both National 5 and Higher Environmental Science, with the Science department leading on National 5 level and the Geography department leading on the Higher course.
Environmental science is a multidisciplinary subject, bringing together aspects of biology, chemistry, geography and sustainability, helping students explore real-world issues such as climate change, resource management, biodiversity and pollution. This makes the course both highly relevant for anyone interested in the environment, global challenges or future careers in STEM and sustainability fields.
The course offers learners a chance to develop a wide range of valuable skills. These include scientific inquiry, data collection and analysis, problem-solving, and critical thinking, all of which are strengthened through practical fieldwork and investigative tasks. Students also build skills in evaluating environmental decisions, interpreting complex information, and communicating findings clearly—abilities that are vital in further study, the workplace, and informed citizenship.
Higher Environmental Science not only supports progression into higher education and science-based careers, but also equips young people with the knowledge and skills needed to make responsible, sustainable choices in an ever-changing world.
