English is a core subject for all learners from S1 through to S4, and a key option choice in the senior phase, including National Qualifications and Advanced Higher.
In line with the Catholic ethos of our school, we believe that every learner is created with dignity, purpose, and a unique voice. English plays a vital role in helping pupils understand themselves and others, and in developing the ability to communicate truthfully, thoughtfully, and with respect.
Literacy underpins all learning. The skills developed in English - reading with understanding, writing with clarity, and communicating effectively - support progress across the curriculum and beyond school life.
Through a wide and engaging range of texts - prose, poetry, drama, media, non-fiction - pupils are encouraged to explore human experience, consider different perspectives, and develop informed, reflective responses. We aim to nurture not only analytical and creative writers, but also thoughtful and compassionate readers of the world around them.
Our courses support learners to succeed in external examinations, while also valuing a range of achievement through coursework, presentations, and other forms of expressive and reflective work. Every pupil is supported to progress, build confidence, and achieve in ways that reflect their strengths and potential.
Above all, we aim to foster a supportive and ambitious environment where pupils grow in confidence, develop their voice, and are encouraged to use language with integrity, purpose, and care for others.
Students can find supportive learning materials through their Classroom Teacher’s Google Classroom.
