Skykomish School History
By: Jason James Luker, 4th grade
Skykomish School has a lot of history from 1893 to present day. The District has been in existence for 127 years! Many families and generations have come and gone through the doors or our school. I had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. Pat Carlson who knows a lot of information about Skykomish School. Mr. Carlson loves our little school and this is what he had to say, “In 1893 the first school in Skykomish was as big as a little house and only had few students and one teacher!” According to Mr. Carlson, "In 1901 they tore down the small school to build a much bigger one for the kids and families who just moved into our community. The logging and railroad industry brought many families into the beautiful town of Skykomish.” In the year 1936, the current building standing today, the 3rd schoolhouse was built said Mr. Carlson.
During my interview I asked Mr. Carlson about the sports for Skykomish School. Mr. Carlson informed me that, “there was a baseball, a basketball, and a football team. First let’s start with the football team, the football team only played for one year. Skykomish was the 6th in the State for football and they won the State championship and also other awards. But the basketball team got the flu and they couldn’t go to the State champion for the second time in a row. A lot of people came to Skykomish to get away from the Spanish Flu in 1919.”
Many people wondered if the school ever burned down. According to Mr. Carlson that did not occur.
Mr. Carlson sincerely appreciated my interview and he was very happy people were still curious about the school's history. Thank you Mr. Carlson!

The first recorded school in Skykomish opened in 1893. The same year Great Northern Railway connected Skykomish to the outside world both East and West. It would be 16 years before Skykomish was incorporated as a town.
When it came time to take education seriously in 1901, the town fathers chose to construct a remarkable schoolhouse. Just why this elegant edifice with Cape Dutch parapets, reminiscent of hundreds of buildings in South Africa, seemed to fit Skykomish's profile has been lost to history, but it must have been a clear message to students that their learning was important when they entered the new building in 1902.
