Howard Phillips Lovecraft, better known as H.P. Lovecraft, is an American fantasy and horror writer famous for his pieces published in the earlier half of the twentieth century. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island on August 20, 1890, and many of his stories are set in his beloved hometown. He drew inspiration from the places that surrounded him, places that were a part of his everyday life that impacted him so greatly that he incorporated seemingly normal locations into hauntingly gruesome settings in his stories. Some of his most famous stories include “The Rats in the Walls,” “The Shunned House,” “The Haunter of the Dark,” and “The Colour out of Space,” all of which are loved by Lovecraft fans across the globe.
Unfortunately, though he did have some pieces published in his lifetime (in magazines such as Weird Tales), Lovecraft died at the young age of 46, impoverished and hardly known. It was only after his death that his work was recognized and rediscovered, and he was given more respect and attention. Every year, more fans of Lovecraft emerge, all appreciative of his works and his mark on the horror genre. His style, distinctively known today as “Lovecraftian”, is still present in the modern day horror genre, showing how Lovecraft’s mark on this genre has lasted quite some time, and will continue to last.
Lovecraft was inspired by many different locations around Rhode Island, many of which are explained in this travel guide. Had he been alive today, Lovecraft would have been able to find much more horror inspiration around the state. Locations that potentially could have been great inspirations for him are also included in this adventure guide, in the hopes that Lovecraft fans, as well as horror fans as a whole, will take the time to journey around Rhode Island and experience spooky sources of inspiration for themselves.
