Impact Level 1 case study:
What’s your strength?®
What’s your strength?®
What’s your strength?® helps individuals translate what they do in their everyday lives into their own unique set of skills and qualities, through a variety of different card-based resources. This includes versions for adults and individuals with additional needs.
As a Careers Adviser, Mentor and Educator for 20 years, founder Katherine Jennick worked with young people who were inspiring, resilient, entrepreneurial and multi-talented but noticed that they couldn’t always recognise these strengths in themselves. She also noted that more and more young people had low self-esteem, particularly when making choices about their future. What’s your strength?® works to counter this, incorporating the essential skills to help raise user’s awareness and understanding of the skills whilst also developing them further through consistent references and reflections.
What’s your strength?® cards are currently used in 16 different countries empowering people of all ages in schools, colleges, universities, youth groups, prisons, hospitals, community groups, to identify their strengths and qualities and feel more empowered.
What’s your strength?® incorporated the 8 essential skills into their Skills Diamond resource which was designed to encourage conversation and debate about the importance of the skills in different job roles. Learners work in pairs to research a specific job role. After discussing the skills needed for the job, they use the Skills Diamond activity to rank the 8 essential skills in order of importance. The key aim is for learners to be able to explain their reasons and give examples of how essential skills are important for the job they have chosen.
Through the incorporation of the skills icons and language, learners are able to build their awareness and understanding of these skills and apply them to different contexts.
What’s your strength?® initially joined the partnership because it aligned with their values and mission. Since doing so they have had the opportunity to connect and collaborate with other likeminded organisations and learn from their examples. A huge benefit is that the resources draw upon the Skills Builder framework and the simple and consistent language is understood by schools, organisations, and young people alike.
“A highlight since joining the partnership has been the Skills Builder Day at Manor Green College. A collaboration of Skills Builder, What’s your Strength?® and amazing young people! The day was arranged by Mel Simmonds who created a really practical and interactive event so all the students could participate at a level that was right for them. The event really was ‘empowerment and inclusion in action’!” - Katherine Jennick
