A podiatrist is a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM), known also as a podiatric physician, qualified by their education and training to diagnose illnesses (such as diabetes and peripheral vascular disease), treat injuries, and perform surgery involving the lower extremities (feet, ankles, lower legs). DPMs can subspecialize in sports medicine, pediatrics, dermatology, radiology, geriatrics or diabetic foot and wound care.
DPMs complete 4-years of medical school education at a US College of Podiatric Medicine.
After graduating from a College of Podiatric Medicine, DPMs enter a 3-year, comprehensive medical and surgical residency (PMSR).
In practice, DPMs have the potential to earn $144,000 per year and treat patients in a 30-60 hour work week.

It was only after I started working as a medical assistant for a podiatrist that I fell in love with the profession, and the next time I applied for medical school I chose to only apply to DPM programs..."

Internships @ Temple University’s School of Podiatric Medicine (TUSPM)
These internships are for students looking to serve diverse patient populations involving patient interaction and interested in sports medicine, surgery, orthopedics and wound care.
Interns attend workshops and seminars on podiatric medicine, as well as shadow and work with podiatric physicians in hospital, private practice and outpatient clinic settings. By collaborating with a TUSPM student-doctor throughout the internship, each student will also develop a podiatric presentation. Workshops and seminars will focus on these topics:
introduction to podiatric medicine
biomechanics and pathomechanics of the foot and ankle
foot screening and evaluation
specialties in podiatric medicine (including diabetes, sports injuries, surgery, pediatrics and wound care).
