It is not difficult to know who the target users are at the Miller Nichols Library at UMKC, but to ensure we didn't miss anything we had an interview with our contact, Kelley Martin who is the Assessment and User Research Coordinator at UMKC, to better understand the subtle nuances of the school library users. In this email correspondence with Kelley we discovered that, besides college students being the main targeted users, there are a few non-students referred to as "guests" who do use many of the library's facilities.
One group of users that could be considered as "underserved" by the library are transfer students. The reasoning for this is that the school library sends out introductory videos that provide virtual tours, information on various library facilities, and other important information. These videos are shared with new students and sent directly to their school email at the beginning of the semester. Any student that is a transfer student or anyone who has started the semester late may miss out on those instructions.
Having this information at the beginning of our research was vital in developing user personas, card sorts/user interviews, and sitemaps.
Based on the user information collected, the following personas were created to represent a member of the underserved group and a member of the targeted group. The profiles focus on what users would be able to achieve on the site as goals. While the section on frustrations explains the tasks or needs that could not be met by the site. Following are synopsizes of the student's life and what impact the site has on their daily routines.
The following personas were created by using the underrepresented and targeted groups. The mock interviews focus on the users' interests and environment related to their student life in "backgrounds." As for the area of Library use and experiences, students give feedback about the positive and negative interactions they have related to in-person and online use.
