Creative Futures is a project completed during the 2025/26 school year by Professors Dana Ragouzeos, Leila Ensaniat, and Marjan Khatibi in the SJSU Design Department. This project is supported by a CSU Artificial Intelligence Innovation Challenge Grant.
Project Goals:
Define learning outcomes that can be applied consistently across foundational courses in Graphic, Industrial, and Interaction Design.
Develop guidelines for ethical and equitable use of generative AI technologies for classroom instruction and project-based learning so that instructors and students can apply shared language and understanding both inside and outside of the classroom.
Create case studies and templates for application and reflection on generative AI in foundational and intermediate design courses, so that instructors and students have concrete examples to reference.
Establish recommendations for how AI can used in students’ project work to prepare them to succeed in a professional environment.
Accomplish all of the above while centering and prioritizing development of students’ critical-thinking and systems-thinking skills, building upon the Design Department’s existing strengths of project-based exploration, productive critique, and problem-solving.
Our Process:
This work centered the student voice and active experimentation with new tools, technology, and processes, including:
8 codesign workshops with students and faculty
Surveys with 150+ students and faculty
10 interviews with industry experts
Feedback sessions with 300+ students
20+ hours of in-class experimentation with tools
300+ hours of out-of-class experimentation with tools
300+ hours of secondary research
Thank you to our students and colleagues in the Design Department at SJSU who generously contributed their time, experience, and expertise to the development of this work.
