An Unexpected Journey: Lessons Learned and the Importance of Remaining Agile

Abstract
Annabelle will reflect upon her 22 year career in R&D spanning four institutions across the petroleum and electronics industries, and a national laboratory. She will highlight the many lessons learned and differences she experienced working in these varied environments. Each setting offered different types of opportunities, had distinctive workplace dynamics, unique challenges, and certain associated pros and cons. After experiencing many unexpected changes in life and in the various work situations, the importance of remaining agile and resilient remained key themes to success.
She will give a brief overview of the wide span of research topics on which she worked including: nanoporous materials synthesis (zeolites and metal-organic frameworks), CO2 separation from flue gas, tamper-indicating devices, hydrogen storage materials, radioactive gas detection, proton therapy devices, and organic glass scintillator development.
Biography
Annabelle obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and her Master’s Degree in Chemistry from the University of Michigan. She then joined Universal Oil Products (UOP, a Honeywell company) for six years before moving to California. She worked with Honeywell Electronic Materials in Sunnyvale for two years, and then joined the Chevron Energy Technology Company for the following four years. For the past ten years, she has worked at Sandia National Laboratories, where she is currently a senior member of the technical staff. Outside of work, Annabelle enjoys international and domestic travel (visited all 50 states), hiking, weightlifting, kickboxing, and latin dancing.
