Preparing Your Child For School
Social Story for Starting School at St Joseph's
The Prep Teachers have put together a social story to read to your child before they start school.
At our school, we use social stories to support children in learning new skills, feeling calm, and building confidence in everyday situations.
PICTURES BOOKS ARE A WAY TO EXPLORE NEW IDEAS, CHALLENGES AND EXPERIENCES
Sharing a picture book with your child is a great way to explore new and familiar experiences and language. We know you will be talking to your child about starting school and developing ways to help your little one feel less challenged by this big life change. You may wish to purchase some of the books listed below or borrow some titles from your local library.

Some ways you can help your child prepare for school
Read a bedtime story every night. Ask your child questions about the story and explain words they don’t know.
Make reading an enjoyable experience, choose stories that interest your child.
Ensure your child is able to use the toilet by themselves.
Encourage them to take turns, to share and listen when someone else is speaking.
Give your child small responsibilities e.g. setting the table, putting their toys away.
Most importantly, be positive about going to school. Read the starting school story on this website to discuss what they may experience during their time at school.
NUDE FOOD
Nude Food is a popular term in schools and preschools, but what exactly does this mean? Simply put, it's food without excess packaging. Usually, this means food that is not processed, often making it a healthier and more environmentally friendly option. Nude Food reduces the amount of 'stuff' that needs to go in bins to be sent to landfill. Durable, reusable containers are a great way to bring food, as they may last from pre-school through to high school and beyond, providing long term cost savings and environmental benefits.
