My name is Kari Harrant, and I will be seeing your child for ELA this year.  I live in DeWitt with my fiance and have three children.  My daughter, Madeline (23) graduated from Emerson College in Boston, and is currently living in NYC and working in publishing for Macmillan Publishing Company. My son, Mitchell (21) is currently a senior at CMU, and my youngest, Mia (19) will be a sophomore at WMU this year. I completed my undergraduate studies at Spring Arbor University, where I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. Currently, I am in my eleventh year of teaching here at Oakview South, ten of which have been spent teaching fifth grade ELA.

My goal for the school year is to promote reading and literacy through a variety of genres, media, and discussion in an effort to see growth over the course of the year.  We will also be spending more time utilizing close reading skills with nonfiction text.  Students are encouraged to read whatever might be around them and to read often.  The key is to find something you like and find out as much as you can about it. 

My expectation is to have a great year and prepare our students for the challenges of middle school.
