CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS

Dear Parents/Guardians and 5th graders,

We are so excited to be starting another school year! We are thrilled to have the privilege of sharing this year with your child as this is going to be a year of significant growth. We strongly believe that together, “WE are the world’s BEST class!” We have listed some of the goals and expectations for our classes. We have high expectations for our students as this year bridges the gap from elementary to middle school. This includes good work habits and appropriate behavior. The major expectations for our students - - -

* To RESPECT themselves and their classmates at all times.

* To be RESPONSIBLE for themselves, their actions, and their work.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT SYSTEM/IN CLASS LEARNING:

In all fifth grade classes, it is required that each student respect others and their right to learn.

A verbal warning will always be issued first to redirect the student. If for some reason, students are not able to come up with a solution on their own, the following consequences may be implemented by their teacher:

STEP ONE: Verbal redirection.

STEP TWO: Written warning ~ email form will be sent to parents filled out by the student.

STEP THREE: Caution Card sent home requiring parent signature.

STEP FOUR: Office referral (dependent upon severity of infraction) to be determined by administration.

** There are some behaviors in which an automatic office referral is given, please refer to the student handbook on SJPS website for more information.

ASSIGNMENTS:

First and last name, along with the date and homeroom teacher, should always be written in the upper right hand corner of every assignment.

PAPER:

NEATNESS COUNTS!! Any assignment that is sloppy or crumpled will be given back to the student and they will be asked to REDO the assignment. Assignments should be completed in pencil when written out.

SUPPLIES:

In 5th grade we rotate to multiple classrooms for different subjects. Therefore, it is important that students come to each class prepared with their folder, laptop, and supplies i.e., pencils, headphones, pencil box. This is an organized way of switching classes, with the entire homeroom lining up and moving together as a class. We believe that this will make the transition to middle school easier as we help prepare students to become responsible.

Attendance Make-UP Work

Regular attendance is vitally important to your child’s success in school. Please check the Parent Handbook for the procedures for reporting an absence, tardy arrivals, and early pick-up. After being absent, it is the student’s responsibility to get missed assignments from each teacher. It is the student's responsibility to make up their work when absent. Generally, students will have one school day for each day absent. For example, if you missed two days of school, you will have two days to make up.

Cell Phones & Personal Technology:

While cell phones are permitted on school grounds, students are NOT allowed to bring their phones out during school hours. In the event that you need to get your child information, we ask that you contact the office.

Hats/Hoods

We have a no hat/hood policy in 5th grade. Students are not allowed to wear hats or hoods in the classroom.

Toys/stuffed animals/fidgets

These are not allowed in the classroom as they tend to be a distraction and have the tendency to get lost amongst the rotation. Students should keep these items at home.

Gum

Gum is not allowed in any classroom. This includes outside on the playground during recess.
