Cadets under Teekay and The Teekay Foundation got to experience the fruit of their labor of building the boats as they sail first time during the Balangay Marina Sailing and Yacht Club (BMSYC) launching last May 26, 2019 in Butuan Bay.
It was known that the TK and the TKF cadets in partnership with BMSYC had been building boats for two weeks. The activity equipped them with vast knowledge in boatbuilding which is beneficial to them as aspiring seafarer. The activity sought to help the cadets learn the crafts of sailing, thus, the launching was highlighted using the boats which they built.
The cadets were first oriented about the “do’s and dont’s” in sailing. They were accompanied by the experienced—sailors behind the club teaching them the fundamentals and principles of sailing. They were taught how to maneuver the boat as it only uses sail and wind power to propel. They experienced capsizing and
grounding and made them learn how to recover the boats such situations.
Finally, the cadets were given the chance to sail by themselves after the thorough discussions from the veterans. They were able to go with the wind and waves which will eventually be their environment in the future.
According to them, “Sailing is not just a hobby or sports, it’s an identity of being a Sailor”.
